indie - an abbreviation of the word Independent. Most commonly referred to as ‘independent of the mainstream’ or as they taught my in my sociology 101 class - counter cultural. Some would say that ‘indies’ are anti-conformity. They, err.. we, are not influenced by the mass media, but rather search out, for themselves, the ‘good.’ Good art, good movies, good books, and good music.

You will rarely, if ever, hear an indie band on MTV. Indie movies are not shown at your local theater. Indie literature is discussed over a pint of beer, or a cup of Java, and it rarely will ever see the New York Times Bestsellers. Though, all of these are not full truths.

That’s the problem with trying to define ‘Indie.’ It’s entirely un-indie.
